LONGRANGER FUEL AND WATER TANKS

Step-By Step Installation

Outback Australia is a vast and very unforgiving place.

There are places where you must travel many hundreds, and even thousands, of kilometres between reliable fuel and water availability.

The 300's standard 110-litre tank is woefully inadequate for outback touring, particularly if you're heavily laden or towing, and carrying substantial amounts of fuel in jerry cans is far from ideal, with haphazard mounting options on roofracks, or worse, inside the car.

While water can be safely carried inside the car, it consumes a lot of space and can be difficult to dispense when you first need to drag the container out from behind other gear.

Fortunately, long range fuel and water tanks are available to solve these problems.

LONG RANGE FUEL TANK FOR THE LANDCRUISER 300

I've been using LONGRANGER's fuel tanks without issue since the 1990s. I've had them installed in my 1989 Nissan Patrol, my 2001 Landcruiser 105, 2012 LandCruiser 200, and now the LandCruiser 300.

Made in Australia by Out Of Town 4WD near Newcastle, they've been manufacturing here for over 40 years, and continue to do so even as many other tank manufacturers have shifted their production to Asia.

For the LandCruiser 300, they offer several different options for increasing fuel capacity, depending on whether you want to relocate the spare tyre. If not, then you can replace the factory 30-litre sub tank with their TR92D 76-litre replacement, adding 46 litres of capacity for a total of 156-litres.

If you're happy to relocate the spare onto a rear bar (as I was), then you can opt for the TR100D 152-litre rear-mounted fuel tank, increasing capacity to a massive 232-litres, and more than doubling the standard touring range of the 300.

The other big plus of choosing the larger tank, is that it frees up space for the installation of their stainless water tank.....

STAINLESS STEEL WATER TANK FOR THE LANDCRUISER 300

In the past, I've always relied on haphazard water storage in my 4WDs, usually carrying water containers in the car or relying on water carried in my camper trailer, if I had it with me.

But for the 300, LONGRANGER's option to place a water tank into the space vacated by the factory sub fuel tank was a perfect solution.

The 60-litre TW23SS stainless steel water tank fits neatly mid-vehicle, and incorporates an under bonnet filler, remotely located tap and automatic water pump. There's no loss of ground clearance, and the 60-litre capacity is more than adequate for most trips.

The tank can only be installed in conjunction with the TR100D fuel tank.

IMPORTANT

The "Installation" section should not be taken as instructions. It is simply a documenting of the procedure I followed for my own installation. No warranty is provided as to the accuracy of the information, and/or whether it applies in your situation or to your vehicle. If you're not qualified and/or don't have the correct equipment, have the tanks fitted professionally. Check the latest version of installation instructions supplied with your tanks, or available from LongRanger.

  • There is the potential for vehicle damage if the products are not installed correctly;
  • There are potential injuries if appropriate safety procedures are not followed.

If you undertake your own installation, you do so entirely at your own risk.

CONCLUSION

I installed these tanks just before we headed off on a 6-week trip to the remote Canning Stock Route.

The fuel tank provided more than enough fuel to cope with the near 1,000km distance between refuelling points on the track itself, and also allowed me to dodge some of the the most expensive fuel locations between Uluru in the NT and Wiluna. I estimate that on this trip alone, I saved several hundred dollars by being able to pick and choose where to buy fuel.

The 60L of water was more than enough to supply me with drinking and washing water between communities on the track, avoiding the need to use questionable well water or carry water inside the car.

The tanks both performed brilliantly on the trip, surviving the horrendous corrugations unscathed, and proving more durable than one of the imported tanks in our convoy. It cracked and failed before the half-way point, requiring some bush mechanics for a temporary repair, and an early exit from the Canning.

If there's any accessories that require the absolute best in quality and durability, then surely water and fuel tanks are those accessories. It's very unfortunate therefore, that several well known tank brands have quietly shifted their production offshore. The outcome is declining quality leading to catastrophic failure under the worst conditions the Australian outback can dish out.
