REPLACEMENT HORNS

Step-By Step Installation of better horns in a LandCruiser 300

The LandCruiser 300's standard horns are far from ideal. They aren't very loud, and have a poor note. They're the same cheap and nasty horns fitted to the Corolla, Yaris etc.

Fortunately, upgrading them is a cheap and very simple plug-and-play installation, just requiring a couple of spanners. No wiring or soldering is required. 5-10 minutes is all that it takes.

Watch the video or follow the step by step installation shown below.

You can find the replacement horns here on eBay.

LANDCRUISER 300 HORNS

The 300 uses a pair of standard Toyota electronic horns, mounted to the radiator support panel behind the grille. They produce a terrible sounding high pitched note.

Replacing them with a couple of dual-note snail type horns is an easy DIY installation, using the original mounting brackets and standard Toyota plugs.

IMPORTANT

The "Installation" section should not be taken as instructions. It is simply a documenting of the procedure I followed for my own installation. No warranty is provided as to the accuracy of the information, and/or whether it applies in your situation or to your vehicle. If you're not qualified and/or don't have the correct equipment, have the horns fitted professionally.

  • There is the potential for vehicle damage if the lights are not installed correctly;
  • There are potential injuries if appropriate safety procedures are not followed.

If you undertake your own installation, you do so entirely at your own risk.

CONCLUSION

A very easy DIY upgrade for the 300-series. As you can hear at the end of the video, they sound much better than the factory horns, and are quite a bit louder as well.

LandCruiser 300 Replacement Horn Install

Step 1: Remove radiator cover trim

  • Release the seven button clips, by pushing in the centre then lifting each clip out of its hole;
  • Lift the cover off and set it aside.

If you lose or break any of the button clips, find replacements here on eBay.

Step 2: Remove the factory horns

  • Use a 12mm spanner to unbolt the two factory horns from the radiator support panel;
  • Unplug the electrical connection from each horn.

Step 3: Remove the brackets from the factory horns, and attach to the new horns

  • Use a 14mm spanner to remove the factory brackets from the original horns;
  • Attach the factory brackets to the new horns. You may need to supply your own M6 nuts and washers.

Step 4: Install the new horns

  • Using the original mounting bolts, install the new horns onto the radiator support bracket;
  • Plug the original wiring plugs onto each horn.

Step 5: Refit the radiator cover trim

  • Place the trim back into position;
  • Refit the seven original button clips. Do this by pushing the centre of each clip out, then insert the clip into the hole, and push the centre button in until it's flush with the outside of the clip.

If you lose or break any of the button clips, find replacements here on eBay.
